Revised Math Lesson Using Funds of Knowledge

For our Week 1 Discussion, we were to respond via a video reflection of how we, as teachers, can engage learners’ funds of knowledge by acknowledging their prior learning (considering their culture, lived experiences, identity, and interests). Our video reflection was to address a specific common core standard and how we would build upon the students’ interests to seek engagement. We were allowed to use the contextual information below to provide an example or we could share a personal experience. We were to make sure our video reflection was at least 2 minutes with specific examples (instructional strategy and activities) and respond (via video) to at least two peers meaningfully.

Instructions to Alternative – Contextual Example

If we could not think of a personal example, you were advised to consider the following example to respond to our video reflection assignment:

A 6th-grade teacher is teaching a lesson on adding and subtracting decimals. The teacher has several students with EL and special needs and prefers to teach an interactive, hands-on lesson, as this will ensure mastery of content and engagement.  To build upon learners’ funds of knowledge and prior learning, the teacher chooses a list of foods commonly found in the grocery store and then requires the students to identify the total cost of the food list. However, the students appear to not be engaged. As the teacher, your task is to re-design an engaging and interactive lesson that captures students’ funds of knowledge while activating prior knowledge. Students will provide a summary cost of their favorite foods.

Provide a video reflection of how you would change the lesson to capture learners’ funds of knowledge and prior learning, as well as the specific common core standard you are addressing.

Consider the student’s lived experiences, culture, interests, and funds of knowledge.
