For the Week 2 Discussion assignment, we were to record a 3–5 minute response video to the following prompt:
“At lunch break, you run into a colleague of yours in the staff room. Andrea and you are both in your first year of teaching and often trade and share ideas and best practices. You also have a trusting relationship where you can come to each other with problems that are occurring in the classroom and ask for support. Andrea mentioned that she just finished grading the results of her weekly quiz. She is feeling a little bit defeated because she has realized that the students aren’t comprehending the new vocabulary terms she taught this week. She had planned a laboratory activity for the next day where these vocabulary terms would be necessary and is unsure of what her next steps should be.”
Within our advice to our colleague, Andrea, we were to include the following answers to these sentence frames:
- One thing I noticed is…
- Have you thought of…
- I wonder if…
- Maybe you could try…
As an Intern Teacher, we were to complete this video activity taking into consideration our current classroom experience. If you do not have classroom experience yet, we were to view this assignment through the lens of a student teacher.
As a student teacher who does not currently have a classroom, we were to reflect using our personal assets/strength areas (what comes naturally to us and drawing from past experiences) to offer our colleague some advice.
There was no wrong answer here. We were to think of ways that we could not only console our colleague and friend but also offer support so that she could use the information and data she had collected about her class.
